How Much Should I Expect to Pay for Music Lessons?

This is such a great question to many people who are looking to further there musical talents. I, being one of them, have taken both vocal and piano lessons for many years. I can only talk about these two types of lessons since it is what I am familiar on, but it would be accurate information. These rates are also based on me living in Kansas and lessons were being taken in the 1990′s and 2000′s.

The first step in deciding on how much to pay is to figure out what you are really wanting to get out of the lessons. Are you wanting to become the next pop star, or, are you looking to get a solo in the Christmas pageant and need some guidance. I took singing lessons to widen my range and be able to stretch my voice to it’s fullest. I went once a week, 4 times a month, for $30 a month, for a 30 minute session. This is average for what I have found. My teacher was a music instructor at a high school, which was just what I was looking for. Some of my friends took some lessons from private teachers for around the same price as well.

The piano lessons I took from an older lady that had played for 30 years at my Church. This was her full time passion was teaching us kids how to play some beautiful music. I went one time every 2 weeks for my first 6 years, at $25 a month. I then ended up going once a week for my last 4 years of playing, a 30 minute session, for $40 a month. I did find that some of my friends spend a little less for piano lessons for around 4 times a month at around $25, but the teacher did not have as much experience.

I treasured my piano lessons more than the vocal lessons. I feel like I got more out of them and also that I took them more seriously. I would suggest paying for someone who has many years of experience. I really do believe that you get what you pay for, I would not skimp out on talent, that is priceless.
